Exploring Architecture at Batson Associates with Avery Kemble

Growing, Learning, and Embracing Architecture

Avery Kemble, 2024

Avery Kemble, an architectural intern at Batson Associates, is a recent Clemson University graduate whose connection to Batson Associates goes back to a family project. His father, a doctor, worked closely with Batson Associates when they renovated one of his medical offices. Nicole, a lead architect on that project, worked closely with Avery’s father, which left a lasting impression on him. When it came time for Avery to find an internship during his junior year at Clemson, his father suggested reaching out to the firm. From Barcelona, where Avery was studying abroad, he interviewed with Louis and Geordan, and soon after, he secured an internship.

Avery’s love for architecture began in childhood. He always enjoyed drawing and was fascinated with how things were put together, from building with Legos to designing treehouses. A visit to his cousin, a fellow Clemson Architecture graduate, solidified his dream of becoming an architect.

Crediting his cousin for inspiring his career path, Avery says, “I got to see their big table with all their models and drawings, and I knew this is what I wanted to do.”

At Batson Associates, Avery has found a supportive and collaborative environment. “The people at Batson are 100% my favorite part. Everyone is so friendly, and open to conversation, but they also understand when it’s time to get to work,” Avery shares.

The boutique firm atmosphere allows him to take on significant responsibilities, even as an intern. From day one, Avery has been involved in meaningful projects, from early design work to seeing projects through construction. “I really like that they’re willing to trust me and give me hands-on experience with real projects,” he adds.

One of Avery’s favorite projects was designing the Black Creek Medical office building. Early in the project, Avery had the opportunity to work in SketchUp, modeling the exterior and exploring creative ideas.

“It was a lot of fun because I felt like I had a lot of creative control,” he explains. One of his ideas—a prominent tower—became a key design feature in the final building, which is now entering the construction phase. “It’s awesome to see something I worked on actually being built.”

Another project close to Avery’s heart is a small renovation in Athens at an outpatient surgery center. Though more technical, involving equipment replacement and coordination with engineers, Avery finds the challenge exciting. “It’s fun to sink my teeth into the details, even the challenges,” he admits. Working alongside senior architects like Jeff, he appreciates the learning curve and the trust Batson Associates places in him to manage projects.

Born and raised in Greenville, Avery is passionate about designing spaces that inspire curiosity, especially in educational settings. “Designing schools would be a dream project for me,” he shares, expressing a particular interest in creating spaces for both elementary and higher education. Looking at the firm’s work on Clemson University’s nursing school and local elementary schools, Avery sees endless possibilities for blending functionality with creativity in architecture.

As Avery continues to grow in his career, his time at Batson Associates has laid a strong foundation for future success. With his sights set on grad school and a passion for architectural innovation, Avery Kemble is a name to watch in the world of design.
