A Conversation with Architectural Intern, John Keller

Welcome Batson’s newest Architectural Intern

John Keller, 2024

Hailing from Gaffney, South Carolina, meet Batson Associates’ Architectural Intern, John Keller. John's journey with architecture began with an unexpected twist—initially pursuing engineering, he soon realized a passion for broader creative solutions. Architecture captured his imagination, blending logic, creativity, and problem-solving in ways that resonated with him.

John's path to Batson Associates started at Clemson University's career fair, where Batson stood out among the firms he considered. What drew him in? The intimate, boutique-sized firm environment that offered the chance to build close-knit relationships—a "work family," as he puts it.

"After speaking with different firms, Batson was definitely high on my priority list," John recalls. "I wanted to be in a place where I felt genuinely welcomed, and Batson gave me that feeling from day one."

Now three months into his professional architecture journey, John appreciates the supportive environment at Batson. His decision to join was influenced by meaningful conversations with the team that made him feel valued. Since then, he's been immersed in a variety of projects, from car dealerships to ICU rooms—a diversity of experience that has kept his work both challenging and exciting.

One of his recent projects involved a PICU renovation with WellStar in Augusta. Faced with the challenge of meeting strict square footage requirements within an existing structure, John enjoyed the problem-solving aspect of weighing the pros and cons of various design solutions.

"That's the beauty of architecture," he says. "There’s more than one way to reach the right answer, and finding the best alternative is what makes the process so interesting."

John’s experience has provided more than just technical experience; it’s also given him the opportunity to grow under the mentorship of senior designers including Jeff Fogle, CEO and Nicole Lindemer, AIA.

"I've had a mentor on every single project, and the knowledge I've gained from them has been invaluable," John shares. The sense of camaraderie at Batson extends beyond professional guidance—John describes the work environment as a place where everyone feels like a friend, and there’s always something new to look forward to.

Outside of work, John has an interesting past venture—he once owned and operated a shoe-cleaning business in high school called "Keller Cleans." While he may not be polishing sneakers anymore, his entrepreneurial spirit continues to shine through in his approach to architecture.

Looking ahead, John is eager to dive deeper into the project management side of architecture. He’s excited about transitioning fully from academic life to professional practice and is focused on establishing his career. His advice to others? Don’t wait—get involved and make the most of opportunities as they arise, because time moves faster than you think.

John Keller’s journey is a testament to the power of adaptability, passion, and a supportive environment. As he continues to grow at Batson Associates, there’s no doubt his future in architecture is bright.
